Tea Eggs on Grand Street

October 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

In the late hour on the corner of Grand St. D train station, this street vendor opens shop. Working from a Pathmark shopping cart, this guy hustles some steaming hot treats.

Black Tea Egg Cart

Tea egg cart

Out of the shopping cart you can find tea eggs (Wiki Definition), Douha (Wiki - tofu pudding), and water. The tea eggs are store in this huge paint bucket fill with this warm black tea ingredients which marinates it. I didn’t try the Tofu, but i seen people fought over it. One dollar gets you five steaming hot eggs and is conveniently transferred into double plastic bags to prevent take home spillage. I was told that the price were the same 10 years ago, I guess inflation has no effect on pricing here.

The egg white has a brownish tone and you can taste a hint of black tea and soy sauce flavor to it.

If you’re looking for a quick cheap snack and don’t mind the odd out of the shopping cart look. Give this vendor a try.
